Volunteers
Training StudentsVolunteers are crucial to the success of DC Squash Academy. We are always looking for volunteers to help on the squash court, as well as to help students with their homework and chaperone community service and cultural outings.

Volunteering Opportunities:

* Squash Coach (need to be a C-level player or higher)
* Academic Tutoring - Help team members with their homework.

Wendy Lawrence, Chair Secretary
Co-founder Wendy Lawrence is the Director of Squash at Results Gym, which she co-owns, and is the Boys and Girls Varsity Squash Coach at The Potomac School in McLean, Virginia. Formerly, Wendy was the General Manager and Head Squash Professional at Washington Sports Club on Capitol Hill for eighteen years. She is a graduate of Vassar College, where she played on the varsity tennis and squash teams. After college, Wendy played squash professionally earning a ranking of No. 12 in the United States. The United States Squash Racquets Association awarded Wendy the National Sportsmanship Trophy in 1984 and the Achievement Bowl in 1987 for outstanding contribution to the sportsmanship and advancement of the game of squash in the United States. Wendy has coached hundreds of area juniors including several dozen ranked in the top ten of their age groups, as well as many who have gone on to play varsity squash at schools such as Harvard, Princeton, Tufts, Colby, Franklin and Marshall, Vassar, University of Pennsylvania, Trinity, Brown, Cornell, and Williams.

Sally Hamlin, At Large
Sally Hamlin has played an integral role in developing the after-school tutoring and cultural outing components of DC Squash Academy. Sally has volunteered in numerous after-school tutoring programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, Atlanta and Washington DC. Sally received a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and masters' degrees in atmospheric and analytical chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She currently develops and manages radiation protection programs at the EPA and has also worked on Capital Hill. Sally grew up playing tennis on the West Coast, but started playing squash on arrival to the East Coast.

James Zug, At Large
James Zug, a co-founder of DC Squash Academy, is a senior writer at Squash Magazine and the author of Squash: A History of the Game (Scribner, 2003), the first-ever history of U.S. squash. He captained the squash team at Dartmouth and worked as a teaching pro under both Wendy Lawrence and Howard Day. In 1997 he wrote the first article about the original youth enrichment squash program, SquashBusters, and has been the editor of StreetSquash's newsletter since its founding in 1999. He is the founder and chair of the USSRA's Doubles Committee. Wendy Lawrence and Howard Day are also on the Executive Squash Committee.

Carole Grunberg, At Large
Carole Grunberg, a native Washingtonian, has been a DC Squash Academy Volunteer since retiring from a 27-year career on Capitol Hill.  She played on the varsity squash team at Vassar College, and was a 3-time US National Champion in her age group.  She is currently ranked #1 in the women's over 50 age group.

Howard Day, Executive Director
Co-founder Howard Day is the Athletic Director and one of three Teaching Squash Professionals at the University Club in Washington, DC. He has been a member of the Prince Advisory Squash Staff since its inception. Formerly, Howard was the Head Professional at the Berwyn Squash Club in Berwyn, PA and also taught squash to undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his bachelor's degree, and Drexel University. For over twenty years, along with Wendy Lawrence, he has been keenly interested in junior development and has coached and trained the local community at all levels. Ken Hisco, Australian champion and international coach, mentored his softball squash education.

Mark Lewis
Mark Lewis is DC Squash Academy's Program Director and Director of Development. As a former US number 2 ranked player, US Men's National Team member, US Men's Junior National Coach and Intercollegiate All-American at Trinity College, he brings a wealth of experience.
