About Our Organization
DC Squash Academy, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, is an after-school youth enrichment program that uses the game of squash to change children's lives. By combining academic tutoring, squash instruction, community service and cultural outings, DC Squash Academy exposes children to a wealth of new experiences and makes a direct and meaningful impact on their futures.
DC Squash Academy was founded by Washington's preeminent junior squash coaches Howard Day and Wendy Lawrence, along with Elizabeth Dupree and James Zug, a senior writer for Squash Magazine who wrote the first article about the original youth enrichment program, SquashBusters. Mark Lewis, former No. 2 ranked player in the US and former US Men's Junior National Coach, is our Program Director and Director of Development. Our world-class coaching staff includes Natalie Grainger, currently ranked #5 in the world; Brian O'Hora, Head Squash Professional at Results; Ghirma Meres, an USSRA certified level two coach; and Sarah Hammond, a two-time All-American player. Our tutoring was started by DC Squash Academy board member Sally Hamlin, who has been involved in numerous after-school tutoring programs..
DC Squash Academy works with fourth through sixth graders from two DC schools: Robert Brent Elementary School and Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School. Team members are selected to participate based on their attitude, effort, dedication and commitment.
Team members from Brent go to Results Gym (315 G Street, S.E., Washington, DC) for after-school academic tutoring and squash instruction. Team members from Stokes go to the University Club for squash instruction and tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. On Saturdays, all team members meet together for squash practices, community service projects or cultural outings.
